How to manage screen time for kids without daily arguments
Simple, family-friendly routines for ending a game, choosing better content, and making screen time easier to manage.
Screen time is easier to manage when the rule is known before the device comes out. A consistent routine gives children a sense of what happens next and gives parents fewer negotiations to handle.
Make the transition predictable
Set a timer together, give a short reminder before it ends, and have the next activity ready. The next activity can be wonderfully ordinary: a snack, a book, music, drawing, or helping with a small household task.
Focus on the whole day
Instead of judging one number in isolation, look at the day as a whole. Has your child had sleep, movement, conversation, outdoor time, and imaginative play? Digital play fits best when it does not replace those essentials.
Choose content with a purpose
Short, age-appropriate games that practise a skill can make a screen session feel more intentional. Avoid apps that constantly interrupt the child with ads, autoplay, or unrelated videos.
